It is recommended to ensure outbreaks of Acne are dealt with before sourcing treatment for the scars. Any new outbreaks can cause further Acne Scarring.
Before any treatment takes place, it is important to know the type of Acne Scar. Each type of scar responds to treatments differently and some treatments are better for different types of Acne Scar. Let’s explore.
Atrophic scars
Atrophic, or raised, scars are common on the face. They are depressed scars, formed when not enough collagen is made when the wound is healing. There are three types of these scars:
- Ice pick scars – these are narrow scars that go deep into the skin. They can appear like small round holes. They can require more treatment because they go deep under the surface of the skin.
- Boxcar scars – These are wide scars with sharp edges. They can be both shallow and deep. The shallower they are the better they can respond to Acne Treatment.
- Rolling scars – These are wide depressions. They have a rolling appearance, with rounded edges.
Hypertrophic scars
Hypertrophic, or raised, scars are more commonly found on the chest and back. They stand out from the surface of the skin. Unlike atrophic scars, they are caused by too much collagen when healing.
